EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Short Admiralty Type 41, a two-seat biplane that made its first flight in April 1912. A significant contribution to the early history of aviation, only three of these aircraft were built and put to use in coastal patrols during the initial stages of the First World War. The Short Admiralty Type 41 was designed and manufactured by the Short Brothers, a British aircraft company, under the guidance of the British Admiralty. Its introduction marked a crucial moment in the development of naval aviation, as it provided the Royal Navy with a reliable and effective means of patrolling coastal waters and defending against potential threats. The Type 41 was a biplane with a wingspan of 33 feet and a length of 31 feet. It was powered by a 50 horsepower Gnome Le Rhone rotary engine, which enabled it to reach a top speed of 65 miles per hour. The aircraft was equipped with a fuselage made of ash and spruce, with fabric covering. Its open cockpit accommodated a pilot and an observer, who could communicate with each other through a tube system. Despite its limited production run, the Short Admiralty Type 41 played an essential role in the early days of military aviation. Its innovative design and capabilities set the stage for the development of more advanced naval aircraft that would be used in the years to come. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the pioneers of aviation, who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the skies above.
