EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Grumpy Sexton's Aid: The Ancient Sand Table of Dennington Church, Suffolk" 2.. This photograph showcases the Sexton and Sand Table, an intriguing artifact now residing in the north aisle of Dennington Church, Suffolk, transformed into a village museum. Dating back to the early 1900s, this fascinating tray once played a pivotal role in teaching village children the art of reading and writing, long before the advent of Wi-Fi enabled electronic whiteboards. The Sexton and Sand Table, also known as an Abax, bears a striking resemblance to similar sand tables used in Ancient Greece to instruct students in writing, geometry, and calculations. This educational tool, with its unusual and captivating appearance, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our ancestors. The image reveals a grumpy-looking sexton, likely the former caretaker of the church, who once used this sand table to aid in the instruction of young villagers. His facial expression, a common depiction of the time, is often described as a "gurning" or "grimacing" expression, reflecting the seriousness and importance of the learning process. The sand table's surface is covered in a thin layer of sand, which, when manipulated with the provided wooden sticks, allowed students to trace letters and words, creating a tactile and interactive learning experience. This simple yet effective teaching tool, now a cherished curio, serves as a reminder of the rich educational history that lies within the walls of Dennington Church and the broader English educational system.
