He had had a finger amuputated but leter returned to active service in Belgium. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. EDITORS COMMENTS
A Light-Hearted Moment at Quex Park VAD Hospital: Eight Wounded Soldiers Enjoy a Playful Afternoon on a See-Saw, 1915 This photograph depicts a group of eight wounded soldiers, including Sgt. Emile Verheyen from Ghent and Artieme Mettrie from Antwerp, taking a break from their daily routine at the Quex Park VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) Hospital in Birchington-on-Sea, England. The men are gathered around a wooden see-saw, with Sgt. Verheyen on the right having just fallen off, causing his counterpart on the left to land heavily on the ground. The amused expressions on the faces of the other soldiers suggest that this was an intentional and playful act. Sgt. Emile Verheyen, a Belgian patient at the hospital between November 14, 1914, and March 29, 1915, is seen here in a more carefree moment, having married a Belgian girl in Ramsgate in 1916. Artieme Mettrie, a patient from Antwerp between November 14, 1914, and May 13, 1915, who had previously had a finger amputated, is holding on to the central post of the see-saw. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, with Commandant Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy H.G. Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, overseeing its operations. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the lives of wounded soldiers during wartime, showcasing their resilience and the importance of camaraderie and levity in the face of adversity.
