EDITORS COMMENTS
This victory celebration card, dating back to circa 1902, commemorates the end of the Second Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa. The card features three esteemed British commanders who played pivotal roles during this African campaign: Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts VC (1832-1914), Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916), and General Sir Redvers Henry Buller VC (1839-1908). At the left, Field Marshal Roberts, a decorated veteran of the Indian Army, served as Commander-in-Chief of British forces in South Africa during the early months of the Second Boer War and subsequently commanded the army in Natal until his return to England in November 1900. He is depicted wearing his full military uniform, adorned with numerous medals, and holding a sword. To his right, Field Marshal Kitchener, who later became the Secretary of State for War and Colonies, commanded the army in South Africa from late 1900 until the end of the war in 1902. He is shown wearing his field marshal's uniform, complete with the distinctive lion and tiger insignia on his shoulders. Lastly, General Sir Redvers Buller, who took command of British forces in South Africa in December 1901, is seen wearing his general's uniform and holding a hat in his hand. The trio of commanders exude a sense of pride and accomplishment, reflecting the British victory in the Second Boer War and the end of a long and arduous conflict in Southern Africa.
