EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of historical seals and documents related to the City of London, in honor of the 700th anniversary of the London Mayoralty. The first seal depicted is that of the Mayoralty of the City of London, featuring St. Thomas à Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury who was martyred in 1170. The common seal of the City of London is displayed next, with the figure of St. Paul, the patron saint of London. Two great seals of English monarchs are also presented: those of King Richard I and King John. King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart, ruled from 1189 to 1199, while King John, who reigned from 1199 to 1216, is infamous for signing the Magna Carta in 1215. A facsimile of the charter of William the Conqueror to the City of London is included, showcasing the historical connection between the monarchy and the City. The print concludes with a portrait of Henry Fitzailwin, the first Mayor of London, who was appointed in 1215. This fascinating display of seals and documents offers a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of the City of London during the 1880s in the 19th century. The City of London, with its long-standing British traditions, continues to be an essential part of the historical fabric of England and Britain.
