EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1975, 19-year-old Leigh Brand, a dedicated member of the 4th Seven Kings Sea Scout Group from Romford, Essex, is proudly receiving the prestigious Top Sea Scout award from Rear Admiral H.W.E. Hollins on board HMS Discovery. The Top Sea Scout award is given annually to the leading Sea Scout in the country, and Leigh earned this distinction by completing the rigorous requirements of the Sea Scouts Pilot Badge and passing a challenging navigation test set by the Admiral Commanding Reserves. Wearing his Sea Scout uniform with pride, Leigh looks confident and determined as he accepts the prize of a pair of binoculars from Rear Admiral Hollins. This image captures the spirit of adventure and achievement that defined Sea Scouting in the 1970s, a time when young people embraced the outdoors, learned valuable skills, and forged lifelong friendships. The association between the Scout Movement and the Navy was strong during this era, and this photograph is a testament to the enduring partnership between the two organizations.
