EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, taken from Charles Alexandre Lesueur and Jacques-Julien Houtou de La Billarderie's contribution to Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in 1849, showcases two remarkable marine creatures: the Hippocampus erectus, or seahorse, and the Exocoetus volitans, or flying fish. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this print bring these elusive underwater inhabitants to life. The seahorse, Hippocampus erectus, is depicted gracefully holding onto a piece of seagrass with one hand, while its curled tail wraps around a coral outcropping. Known for their unique equine shape and the ability to change color and texture to blend in with their surroundings, seahorses are a popular subject in marine zoology. The flying fish, Exocoetus volitans, is shown leaping out of the water, its large, wing-like pectoral fins spread wide. An adaptation to escape from predators, flying fish can glide through the air for short distances, covering up to 20 meters (66 feet) and remaining airborne for up to 500 meters (1,640 feet). This extraordinary ability, combined with their streamlined bodies, allows them to evade danger in the open ocean. This beautiful and historical print not only highlights the natural beauty of these fascinating creatures but also showcases the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail of the artists and engravers of the time. A must-have for marine biology enthusiasts, natural history collectors, and anyone with a passion for the wonders of the natural world.
