EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured lithograph depicts Thraupis bonariensis darwinii, commonly known as the Blue-and-Yellow Tanager, captured in exquisite detail by the skilled hands of John and Elizabeth Gould. The image is taken from the third part of Charles Darwin's seminal work, "Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle," published between 1838 and 1841. The Blue-and-Yellow Tanager is a vibrant, striking bird native to South America. The male is easily identified by its brilliant blue back, wings, and tail, contrasting with its orange belly and yellow breast. The female, while less colourful, retains some orange on her belly and a blue tint on her wings. John and Elizabeth Gould's illustration masterfully captures the anatomy of this bird, from the curve of its beak to the delicate feathers on its head and back. The Tanager is perched on a branch, its body poised in a natural and relaxed position, adding to the lifelike quality of the artwork. The Goulds' collaboration with Darwin on the "Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle" was a significant contribution to the scientific record of the expedition led by Captain Robert FitzRoy. Their meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy resulted in some of the most beautiful and accurate depictions of the birds, mammals, and reptiles they encountered during the voyage. This lithograph is a testament to the artistry and scientific rigour of the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the natural world as it was discovered and documented during a pivotal moment in history.
