EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of European history, the Saracens, a Muslim military and political power based in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa during the Early Middle Ages, are depicted launching a ferocious attack on the city of Bordeaux in 678 AD. The Saracens, led by Duke Eudes of Aquitaine, who had allied himself with them, had set out to conquer the Frankish territories in southwestern France. Bordeaux, a major port city, was a strategic target in their campaign. The Saracens' assault on Bordeaux was a brutal and destructive affair. The city's defenses were breached, and its inhabitants were mercilessly slaughtered or taken captive. The invaders set the city ablaze, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. Duke Eudes, who had hoped to use the Saracens to expand his own power, found himself forced to flee the scene of the carnage. However, the Saracens' victory at Bordeaux would prove to be short-lived. In 732 AD, at the Battle of Tours, they would be decisively defeated by Charles Martel, the Frankish mayor of the palace. Martel, who is often referred to as the "Hammer of the Saracens," led a combined Frankish and Burgundian army against the invaders. The battle, which took place near the city of Poitiers, marked the end of Muslim expansion into Europe. This historical print captures the drama and intensity of the Saracens' attack on Bordeaux, an event that would shape the course of European history for centuries to come. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often violent interactions between different cultures and religions during the Middle Ages.
