EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Samuel Francis Du Pont (1803-1865) captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of one of the most influential American naval officers of the 19th century. Painted by Daniel Huntington (1816-1906) between 1867 and 1868, the portrait is now housed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., United States. Du Pont was born in Newport, Rhode Island, and entered the United States Navy in 1815. He rose through the ranks, becoming a rear admiral in 1862. Du Pont is best known for his role in the Union Navy during the American Civil War. He commanded the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron and was instrumental in the capture of Port Royal, South Carolina, in November 1861. This victory opened the southern ports to Union blockade and paved the way for Union control of the region. In this portrait, Du Pont is depicted in full military uniform, complete with a bow tie and a neatly trimmed beard. His left hand rests on the hilt of his sword, conveying a sense of readiness and resolve. The admiral's piercing blue eyes seem to bore into the viewer, as if daring them to challenge his commitment to the Union cause. Huntington's masterful use of light and shadow adds depth and texture to the portrait, making Du Pont's strong features stand out even more. The portrait is a testament to Du Pont's military prowess and his unwavering dedication to the United States Navy. It is a reminder of a pivotal moment in American history and a tribute to the men and women who served their country with distinction during the Civil War.
