EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful series of photographs captures the chaotic scene of the Salvation Army Riots that took place in Worthing, Sussex on August 30, 1884. The Salvation Army, known for its religious processions and opposition to Sunday drinking, was met with hostility from local opponents who organized a mob to disrupt one of their Sunday services. In the first image, the mob is seen attacking the house and shop of Mr. Head, a local businessman and Salvation Army supporter. The second photograph shows the Town Hall, which served as a refuge for the Salvation Army members during the riots. The third image depicts the Police Station, which was also a target of the mob's violence. In the final photograph, the mob is seen attacking the Salvation Army Barracks, where the members had sought shelter. The Salvation Army members were able to escape to Montague Hall and hide there for the rest of the day. The riots, fueled by opposition to the Salvation Army's religious processions and their stance against Sunday drinking, resulted in significant damage to property and injuries to several individuals. These photographs provide a glimpse into the turbulent history of Worthing and the tensions that existed between different factions of the community during this period. These images are from the Illustrated London News (ILN) and were published on December 21, 1884. They offer a unique and important record of this significant historical event and provide insight into the social and political climate of the time.
