EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts Saint Paul of Tarsus, one of the most influential figures in Christian history. Born a Jewish Roman citizen in the ancient city of Tarsus in present-day Turkey around 5-10 AD, Paul was initially known as Saul. He began his career as a zealous Pharisee and persecutor of early Christians until an encounter with the resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus transformed his life. Paul's newfound faith led him to become a tireless missionary, spreading the message of Christianity throughout the Mediterranean world. He traveled extensively, establishing new communities of believers and writing several epistles that are now part of the New Testament. Paul's letters provide invaluable insights into early Christian theology, ethics, and community life. As a tentmaker by trade, Paul supported himself and his companions during their travels. This occupation also allowed him to interact with people in various communities, furthering the spread of the Christian message. Paul's Jewish background also influenced his teachings, making him a bridge between Judaism and Christianity. Despite facing numerous hardships, including imprisonments, shipwrecks, and persecutions, Paul remained steadfast in his faith and mission. He was ultimately martyred in Rome around 64-67 AD. Paul's legacy continues to inspire millions of people around the world, making him a revered figure in Christian tradition and history.
