EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative detail from the RWF Christmas Truce Plaque in Frelinghien, Belgium, commemorates the extraordinary event that took place on Christmas Day in 1914 during the First World War. Unveiled by Frank Richards' daughter in 2008, the plaque is part of a memorial complex that also honors the German 6th Jaeger Battalion and the 133rd Saxon Infantry Regiment. The poignant inscription on the plaque reads, "Here on the night of Christmas 1914, the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and the German troops of the 6th Jaeger Battalion and the 133rd Saxon Infantry Regiment, met in 'No Man's Land' and exchanged gifts and stories before playing a football match. The plaques were unveiled during a moving ceremony, where the spirit of camaraderie and unity was once again celebrated. The day ended with the Saxons emerging victorious in the football match, as they had in their previous encounter with the Seaforths in 1914. This poignant moment in history, which took place amidst the horrors of the Battle of Ypres, serves as a powerful reminder of the humanity that exists even in the most inhumane of circumstances."
