EDITORS COMMENTS
Rufus Choate, an esteemed American lawyer and statesman, is depicted in this portrait photograph. Born on February 26, 1799, in East Haddam, Connecticut, Choate's legal career began in 1822 after graduating from Yale University and passing the bar exam. He quickly gained a reputation as a brilliant and persuasive lawyer, earning the nickname "Silver Tongue of the Senate" for his eloquent speeches. Choate's political career commenced in 1834 when he was elected as a Whig Party representative to the United States House of Representatives. He served in Congress until 1837, and later became a United States Senator from Massachusetts in 1841. Choate's tenure in the Senate was marked by his strong advocacy for the protection of individual rights and his opposition to the expansion of slavery. Despite his political successes, Choate's personal life was marked by tragedy. His first wife, Sarah Ann Chappel, whom he married in 1825, died in 1834, leaving him with three young children. He married again in 1837 to Harriet Dana, with whom he had three more children. Tragically, Harriet died in 1856, and Choate passed away just three years later on December 17, 1859. This photograph captures Choate in the prime of his career, with a serious yet thoughtful expression. His sharp features and piercing gaze convey a sense of intelligence and determination, reflecting the intensity and passion that he brought to his legal and political pursuits. The portrait is a testament to Choate's enduring legacy as a prominent figure in American history, and a reminder of the significant impact he had on the development of the country's legal and political systems.
