Westminster Abbey, London, 1923: A Glimpse into the Elegant and Historic Scene of the Duke of York's Royal Wedding to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon This evocative photograph captures the breathtaking scene of the altar at Westminster Abbey during the Duke of York's wedding to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on 26 April 1923. Westminster Abbey, a magnificent Gothic cathedral steeped in history and royal tradition, had not been used as a venue for royal weddings for over six centuries. The trend was reinstated when Princess Patricia of Connaught chose the iconic church for her wedding to Alexander Ramsay in 1919. The Duke of York's wedding was the third royal event to take place at the Abbey in quick succession, following Princess Mary's marriage to Viscount Lascelles in 1922. The elegant altar, adorned with intricate stained glass windows and supported by grand buttresses, sets the stage for the union of the Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke and Duchess, who would later become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, exchanged vows in the hallowed grounds of the Abbey, surrounded by the rich history and architectural grandeur of this iconic London landmark. The wedding marked the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the royal couple and added another significant event to the long and storied history of Westminster Abbey. Since then, Westminster Abbey has continued to be a popular venue for royal weddings, with the Duke of Kent, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne, and Prince Andrew all choosing to tie the knot within its hallowed walls.
