Royal Wedding 1923 - the bridal gown
Photographs of the bridal gown and bridesmaids dress worn at the wedding of Prince Albert, Duke of York to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1923. The wedding dress, designed by Handley Seymour was medieval in style, of moire mousseline with a knife pleated train and centred silver lame, stiffly fringed with pearls and silver beads. The train of old Nottingham lace was a gift from Queen Mary. The bridesmaid dresses were of ivory chiffon over crepe de Chine with floating panels of chiffon, appliqued leaves of silver lame and girdled silver foliage, caught at one side with an Anglo-Scottish posy. Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the elegant beauty of the bridal party at the Royal Wedding of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, which took place at Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1923. The bride's medieval-inspired gown, designed by Handley Seymour, was a breathtaking sight in moire mousseline, featuring a knife-pleated train with a centre of silver lame, stiffly fringed with pearls and silver beads. The train, a gift from Queen Mary, was made of old Nottingham lace. The bridesmaids wore ivory chiffon over crepe de Chine dresses with floating panels of chiffon, appliqued leaves of silver lame, and girdled silver foliage. Caught at one side with an Anglo-Scottish posy, these dresses perfectly complemented the bridal gown's exquisite design. The fashion of the 1920s was characterized by its modernity and departure from traditional styles, but this Royal Wedding showcased the timeless elegance of medieval influences. The intricate details of the gowns and the grandeur of the event continue to captivate us today, making this a truly unforgettable moment in royal history.
