EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sleek and powerful form of the Vought F7U-1 Cutlass, an American naval fighter aircraft that graced the skies during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The Cutlass, manufactured by the Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft Division, was designed as a carrier-based fleet defense fighter and was the first swept-wing design to enter fleet service with the United States Navy. The F7U-1 Cutlass was a significant departure from traditional fighter designs of the time, with its innovative swept-wing configuration and distinctive inverted gull-wing shape. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney J35-A-13 turbojet engine, the Cutlass boasted impressive performance capabilities, including a top speed of over 600 miles per hour and a range of over 1,200 miles. Despite its advanced design and impressive specifications, the F7U-1 Cutlass faced numerous challenges during its service life. Its complex design and high maintenance requirements made it a costly and difficult aircraft to operate, and it was eventually replaced by more reliable and cost-effective fighter designs. This photograph captures the F7U-1 Cutlass in all its glory, with its powerful engine exhaust trailing behind it as it takes off from the deck of an aircraft carrier. The image serves as a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of the aviation industry during the post-World War II era, and the relentless pursuit of technological advancements that continues to drive the field to this day.
