EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Morien Bedford Morgan, RAE (1912-1978), a visionary figure in the field of aviation, is depicted in this striking photograph taken circa 1971. Sir Morien, who was knighted for his services to aeronautics in 1962, is seen here in deep concentration as he chairs the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee. With a keen interest in aerodynamics and a strong belief in the potential of supersonic flight, Sir Morien dedicated much of his career to the development of high-speed aircraft. Born in 1912, Sir Morien's passion for aviation was ignited during his time as a test pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II. After the war, he joined the National Physical Laboratory where he played a key role in the development of the first British jet engine. In the late 1950s, he became the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Supply, where he oversaw the development of the British supersonic research programme. Sir Morien's tenure as chairman of the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee marked a pivotal moment in the history of aviation. The committee was established to explore the feasibility of building a supersonic transport aircraft for civilian use, and Sir Morien's leadership was instrumental in securing funding and support for the project. Although the supersonic transport aircraft never came to fruition during his lifetime, Sir Morien's vision and determination paved the way for future advancements in aviation technology. This photograph captures Sir Morien Bedford Morgan at a pivotal moment in his career, as he worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of aviation. His legacy continues to inspire and influence the field to this day.
