EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the de Havilland DH106 Comet 1, registration G-ALYS, takes center stage. This aircraft was the third production model of the Comet series, but it was the first to be delivered to the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), making it a significant milestone in aviation history. The Comet 1 was the world's first jet airliner to receive a Certificate of Airworthiness (CofA), marking a new era in commercial air travel. Its sleek design and advanced jet technology offered passengers a more comfortable and faster travel experience compared to the propeller-driven aircraft of the time. The Comet 1 was a groundbreaking achievement for de Havilland, a British aircraft manufacturing company. Its innovative features included a pressurized cabin, which allowed passengers to fly at higher altitudes and experience a more stable flight. The aircraft's twin engines provided improved efficiency and reduced noise levels, making it a popular choice among airlines and passengers alike. G-ALYS made its first flight on July 27, 1952, and was delivered to BOAC on August 7, 1952. It was put into service on October 2, 1952, and flew its first revenue-generating flight on October 24, 1952, from London Heathrow to Johannesburg, South Africa. This photograph captures the Comet 1 in all its glory, showcasing the aircraft's distinctive design and advanced technology. It serves as a reminder of the groundbreaking achievements in aviation history that have shaped the way we travel today.
