EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in 1919, we see Arthur Whitten Brown (left) and John Alcock, the intrepid aviators who achieved the first non-stop transatlantic flight in an airplane. The image captures the moment of their triumphant return to Europe, having successfully completed their daring journey from Newfoundland, Canada to County Galway in Ireland. The pair had set out on their epic adventure on June 14, 1919, in a modified Vickers Vimy bomber named "The Star of Canada." They faced numerous challenges during their 16 hours and 28 minutes in the air, including extreme cold, fatigue, and navigational difficulties. But their determination and skill saw them through, making them heroes of the age. Upon their arrival in Ireland, they were greeted with jubilation and acclaim. The photograph shows the two men standing proudly in front of their plane, with Brown holding a cigar and Alcock wearing a fur-lined flying helmet. The Vickers Vimy, which is visible in the background, bears the scars of their arduous journey, with patches of ice still clinging to its wings. This photograph is a testament to the courage and ingenuity of these pioneering aviators, who opened up a new era in air travel and forever changed the way we view the world. Their achievement paved the way for the development of long-distance air travel and cemented their place in history as true pioneers of the skies.
