529 Squadron at RAF Halton, circa 1943: A Glimpse into the Past This evocative photograph captures the members of 529 Squadron at RAF Halton in 1943, standing proudly before their transport aircraft. Among the distinguished group are several future leaders and airmen who would go on to make significant contributions to the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. Standing from left to right, we find F/O Jimmy Harper, F/O Norman Hill, F/O George Henry Ford, F/O John Dennis, an unidentified officer, F/O Jack Follis, and F/O Major (Kiwi) Eade. Seated in the front row are Flt Lt Tommy Walsh, Flt Lt Guy Turner, Sqn Ldr Alan Marsh, AFC (Commanding Officer), Flt Lt Maurice Houdret, and F/O Willie Dunn (Engineer Officer). The photograph was identified on 5 July 2007 by Sqn Ldr Basil Arkell, RAF (Retd), the last known surviving pilot from No 529 Squadron. The image was taken just prior to Basil joining the squadron, providing a fascinating glimpse into the faces of the men who served alongside him during this pivotal period in history.
