EDITORS COMMENTS
Two Vickers Type 665 Valettas of No48 Squadron, Far East Air Force, are seen here after completing supply dropping duties at Kuala Lumpur, Malaya, in the late 1940s. The Valetta, a military variant of the Vickers Viking transport aircraft, was a crucial asset for the British forces during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), which followed the end of World War II. The Valettas, with their distinctive hump-backed design, were used extensively for transporting troops, supplies, and equipment to various locations throughout the region. In this image, we see two examples of the Valetta, each adorned with the distinctive roundel and markings of No48 Squadron, based in Singapore. The aircraft have just completed a supply dropping mission to Kuala Lumpur, likely delivering essential provisions to British forces stationed there. The Valetta's versatility and reliability made it an invaluable asset during the Malayan Emergency, which saw intense fighting between British forces and communist insurgents. The aircraft's ability to operate from unimproved strips and short runways was a significant advantage in the challenging terrain of Malaya. Despite the challenging conditions, the Valetta crews of No48 Squadron performed their duties with great skill and bravery, often flying in difficult weather and under enemy fire. This image captures a moment of respite, as the crews prepare to return to their base in Singapore, having successfully completed their mission. The Valetta's legacy as a vital military transport aircraft continued long after the Malayan Emergency, with the type seeing service in various conflicts around the world. Today, the Valetta is fondly remembered by those who served in the Far East Air Force, as a symbol of the courage and determination of the British forces during a critical period in Malayan history.
