EDITORS COMMENTS
Two Short Sandringham 5s of British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), G-AHZD, Portmarnock, and an unidentified sister ship, rest at their moorings in the bustling waters of Hong Kong harbor. The year is uncertain, but the image captures a moment in time when air travel was still a novelty and the world seemed a little smaller. The Sandringham 5, a short-range airliner produced by Handley Page, was a workhorse of the BOAC fleet during the 1950s and 1960s. Its distinctive hump-backed design housed a spacious cabin that could accommodate up to 58 passengers. The aircraft's twin engines, mounted high on the wings, provided the power to traverse short to medium-haul routes with ease. In this photograph, the two Sandringham 5s sit side by side, their gleaming aluminum bodies reflecting the vibrant colors of the surrounding buildings and the clear blue waters of the harbor. The ships' registration numbers, G-AHZD and Portmarnock, are clearly visible on the fuselage, while the BOAC logo, a blue ensign with a Union Jack in the canton, proudly flies above the cockpit. The image offers a glimpse into the past, when air travel was a more leisurely experience and the world seemed more connected by the day. The two Short Sandringham 5s of BOAC at moorings in Hong Kong harbor are a testament to the golden age of aviation and the spirit of adventure that drove people to explore new horizons. This photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is a reminder of a time when air travel was a thrilling and transformative experience, and the world seemed a little more magical. The image is not to be used for commercial purposes and is available as a rights-managed print.
