EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the Round-tailed Manatee, scientifically known as Trichechus manati. The image is taken from The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Complete Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature, published by Harrison in London between 1798 and 1802. The Round-tailed Manatee is a large, aquatic, herbivorous mammal native to the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. The manatee in this illustration is depicted swimming gracefully in a clear, tranquil body of water. Its round, plump body is covered in wrinkled, grayish-brown skin, and its short, rounded tail is distinctively different from the long, flattened tails of other manatee species. The manatee's large, triangular ears are visible on its back, and its long, curved snout is just visible at the water's surface. The manatee was a subject of great interest to naturalists during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and this illustration is a testament to the detailed and accurate observations made by naturalists of the time. Thomas Pennant, a prominent naturalist, provided the descriptive text for this publication. The manatee was also a popular exhibit in natural history museums, such as the Natural History Museum in London, which houses the Leverian Collection of Zoology, where many of these illustrations were sourced. This beautiful and historical illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of the Round-tailed Manatee but also provides a glimpse into the scientific curiosity and exploration of the natural world during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
