Rouen, 1917

Rouen, 1917, by Marcel Augis (pseudonym of H. Dupont). A number of WW1 French and Belgian artists, including Marcel Augis, trod the battlefields of the Western Front during 1914-1918. They recorded the devastation and the areas containing Allied troops. Many of these etchings/aquatints were sold to soldiers returning home after the war or subsequently purchased on the many battlefield remembrance tours which took place in the 1920s and 1930s. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print, titled 'Rouen, 1917,' is a poignant reminder of the devastation wrought by the First World War on the picturesque city of Rouen, France. Created by Marcel Augis, who used the pseudonym H. Dupont, this work is a testament to the artistic response of a generation of French and Belgian artists who braved the battlefields of the Western Front during 1914-1918. As the war raged on, these artists documented the destruction and the areas where Allied troops were stationed. Their etchings and aquatints, like this one, were not only a source of comfort and connection for soldiers returning home after the war but also for visitors on the many battlefield remembrance tours that took place in the 1920s and 1930s. The print depicts the topographical beauty of Rouen's cityscape, with its grand buildings and winding streets, now scarred by the ravages of war. The once-majestic structures stand as silent witnesses to the conflict that had torn through the city. The image captures the historical significance of the time, offering a glimpse into the past and serving as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war. Marcel Augis, under his pseudonym, contributed significantly to the visual record of the First World War, creating a body of work that continues to resonate with viewers today. This print, 'Rouen, 1917,' is a poignant and moving representation of a city and a time forever etched in history.
