EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the grim reality of war as Romanian soldiers retreat during the First World War. Dated 1916, the photograph shows a group of weary soldiers crossing a river using a makeshift wooden bridge. The soldiers, dressed in their olive-green uniforms, carry their rifles and equipment with them as they make their way across the water. The bridge, constructed from rough planks and ropes, creaks precariously under their weight. The Eastern Front of the First World War saw some of the bloodiest battles in history, with both the Central Powers and the Allies suffering heavy losses. The Romanian Army, which joined the war on the side of the Allies in August 1916, faced a formidable enemy in the Austro-Hungarian and German forces. As the soldiers retreat, they are no doubt aware of the danger that lies ahead. The river, which provides a temporary respite from the enemy, also poses its own risks. The current is strong, and the bridge is rickety at best. Yet, the soldiers press on, their determination to survive outweighing their fear. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during wartime. It also highlights the ingenuity and resourcefulness of troops in the face of adversity. The image is a powerful testament to the human spirit and the resilience of those who fought in the Great War.
