EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Sir Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick (1587-1658) - Lord High Admiral of the Seas" Sir Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick (1587-1658), is depicted in this striking portrait, which showcases his noble stature and the grandeur of his position as Lord High Admiral of the Seas. Rich was a prominent figure during the English Civil War, serving under the Parliamentarian cause. Born on March 12, 1587, Rich was the eldest son of Francis Rich, 1st Earl of Warwick, and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Thomas Leigh. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and entered public life as a Member of Parliament for Warwick in 1614. Rich's military career began in earnest when he was appointed a colonel in the army in 1621. He saw action in the Bishops' War against Scotland and was knighted in 1622 for his bravery. In 1628, he was appointed Lord High Admiral of the Seas, a position he held until his death. During the English Civil War, Rich initially supported King Charles I but later switched allegiance to the Parliamentarians after the outbreak of hostilities. He played a significant role in the naval battles of the war, including the Battle of the Dunes in 1643 and the Battle of the Gabbard in 1653. Rich's tenure as Lord High Admiral of the Seas was marked by his successful defense of the English coast against Dutch raids and his efforts to modernize the Royal Navy. He also oversaw the construction of several new warships, including the Sovereign of the Seas, which was the largest warship in the world at the time. This portrait captures the essence of Sir Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick, as a powerful and influential figure in English history. His military prowess, political acumen, and dedication to the defense of his country earned him a place among the great admirals of the English Navy.
