EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Mary Evans Prints Online takes us back to the tragic events of January 24th, 1909. The image showcases the RMS Republic and SS Florida, two majestic ships forever entwined in history due to their fateful collision near Nantucket, Massachusetts. The focus of the photograph is on the wireless-telegraphy room aboard the RMS Republic, a groundbreaking feature for its time. It was here that Jack Binns, the skilled wireless-telegraph operator, valiantly transmitted distress signals for an astonishing fourteen hours straight amidst the chaos caused by the collision. The Illustrated London News captured several poignant moments related to this disaster. One striking image portrays the sinking RMS Republic after it succumbed to its watery grave following the collision with SS Florida. Another snapshot reveals a glimpse into the aftermath as we witness firsthand the state of SS Florida's bows. This tragic event marked a significant milestone in maritime history as it became known as one of humanity's first encounters with a CQD (Come Quickly, Danger) distress signal issued by a ship in peril. The Marconi wireless telegraph system installed on board made this possible and forever changed how ships communicated during emergencies. As we observe these images from over a century ago, they serve as powerful reminders of both human resilience and tragedy at sea. They offer us glimpses into an era long gone but never forgotten – an era where technological advancements collided with unforeseen circumstances resulting in unforgettable stories etched into our collective memory
