EDITORS COMMENTS
This recruiting poster dates back to 1809, calling for new volunteers to join the esteemed 7th (or The Queen's Own) Regiment of Light Dragoons. The regiment had recently returned to England after serving in Sir John Moore's Spanish campaign of 1808-1809. Moore's army was forced to retreat and was evacuated by sea from Corunna in January 1809, leaving behind many casualties. Tragically, an additional 70 men were lost when the troopship carrying them home was shipwrecked off the Cornish coast. In response to these heavy losses, the regiment began recruiting to replenish its ranks. This poster, with its bold imagery and enticing promises of adventure and honor, would have been displayed in public areas to attract potential recruits. The 7th (or The Queen's Own) Regiment of Light Dragoons had a proud history and this call to arms would have resonated with those seeking to serve their country and make a difference in the world.
