EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by G.H. Davis, titled "From Culverin to 16-inch gun: ranges of naval artillery," offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of naval artillery from the 16th to the early 20th century. The image illustrates the progressive increase in the range of guns and the size of projectiles, from the early culverin cannon used during the Spanish Armada in the 16th century, to the formidable 16-inch gun employed during the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The culverin, a type of muzzle-loading cannon, is depicted on the left side of the print, with a range of approximately 1,300 yards. As we move to the right, we observe the evolution of artillery through the centuries. The 17th and 18th centuries brought about the casting of iron cannon, which allowed for larger calibers and greater ranges. The 19th century saw the introduction of rifled guns, which significantly increased the range and accuracy of naval artillery. By the early 20th century, the size and power of naval guns had reached unprecedented levels. The 16-inch gun on the far right of the print, used during World War I, had a range of over 18,000 yards, making it a formidable weapon against enemy ships and fortifications from a great distance. This print not only showcases the technological advancements in naval artillery but also highlights the pivotal role it played in naval warfare throughout history. From the Armada to the Battle of Jutland, the range and power of naval guns underwent a remarkable transformation, shaping the course of maritime history.
