EDITORS COMMENTS
Queen Virginia II: A Filipino Beauty Reigns at the Manila Carnival, 1922 The Manila Carnival, held in the Philippines from 1908 to 1939, was an annual two-week fair that celebrated harmonious U.S.-Philippine relations and showcased the commercial, industrial, and agricultural progress of the archipelago. This spectacular event, often referred to as the 'greatest annual event in the Orient,' featured lavish parades, mesmerizing shows, and breathtaking firework displays. In 1922, the Manila Carnival crowned its most remarkable queen: Virginia Vidal Llamas, a young and brilliant student from Pagsanjan, Laguna. Daughter of the former governor of Laguna, Vicente Llamas, Virginia defied expectations and outshone candidates from the most exclusive schools to claim the coveted title. Virginia's victory was a significant moment in Philippine history, as she embodied the spirit of progress and determination. Her elegant attire, consisting of a stunning gown, sceptre, and throne, symbolized the beauty, grace, and pride of the Filipino people. As the Queen of the Manila Carnival, Virginia represented the best of the Philippines and its people to the world. Her reign was a testament to the potential and promise of a nation on the cusp of great change. This iconic photograph captures a moment in time when the Philippines and the United States shared a unique bond, and the future seemed filled with endless possibilities.
