This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an impressive array of quail and related gamebird species. The engraving features a total of seven distinct species, each meticulously rendered with intricate detail and vibrant hues. In the center, the Northern Bobwhite, Colinus virginianus, is depicted with its distinctive black and white plumage, while the Crested Bobwhite, Colinus cristatus, is shown with its distinctive crest feathers raised. The Blue-breasted Quail, Excalfactoria chinensis, boasts a striking blue chest and intricate markings. To the left, the Madagascar Buttonquail, Turnix nigricollis, is depicted with its cryptic brown and black plumage, perfect for blending into its forested habitat. The White-bellied Seedsnipe, Attagis malouinus, is shown on the right, with its white underbelly and speckled brown upperparts. The engraving also includes two additional quail species.
