EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait showcases the striking features of the Red-shanked Douc Langur (Pygathrix nemaeus nemaeus), an Old World monkey native to the forests of north and central Vietnam, east-central Cambodia, and possibly in China. The Douc Langur is a member of the Colobinae subfamily within the Cercopithecidae family, and is classified as a placental mammal and a haplorhini primate. Photographed by renowned wildlife photographer Frank Greenaway, this image beautifully highlights the Douc Langur's distinctive red fur on its legs and lower body, which gives this primate its common name. Its fur is otherwise predominantly green, blending seamlessly with the lush foliage of its forest habitat. The Douc Langur's face is marked with a white stripe that runs from the corner of its eyes to the base of its ear, and its hands and feet are adorned with long, curved claws, which provide excellent grip and agility in the trees. The Douc Langur is a solitary monkey, preferring to live in the canopy of the forest, feeding on leaves, buds, fruits, and flowers. They are considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and fragmentation, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival. This photograph serves as a reminder of the beauty and importance of preserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it.
