EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Princess Louise, the Princess Royal and Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939), gracefully releases the dog-shore during the launching ceremony of the screw-corvette ship, Druid, at Deptford Dockyard in London on March 7, 1869. The Princess, dressed in an elegant Victorian gown and holding a parasol, stands confidently on the wooden platform as the ship's builders and crew look on with anticipation. The dog-shore, a long pole with a dog's head at its tip, is used to break the seal between the ship and the dock, allowing water to flow in and float the vessel for the first time. The launch of the Druid, a state-of-the-art corvette with advanced screw propellers, was an important event in the maritime history of Britain. The ship was one of the first to be built with this innovative propulsion system, which would soon become the standard for naval and commercial vessels. The Druid was also significant as it was the first ship to be built at the newly established Royal Dockyard at Deptford, marking the beginning of a new era for the British Navy. Princess Louise, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, was a patron of the arts and a prominent figure in British society. She was known for her love of the sea and her support of the Royal Navy. The launch of the Druid was one of many naval events that she attended during her long and distinguished life. This photograph captures a moment of grace and elegance in the midst of the excitement and innovation of the launch ceremony.
