EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, is seen gracefully dancing with Lord Rupert Nevill, the younger son of the Marquess of Abergavenny, at the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy Ball held on the 22nd of May, 1946. This was the first public ball that Princess Elizabeth attended following her father, King George VI's, passing in February of that year. The young Princess, who was just 21 years old at the time, looked radiant in her elegant gown, adorned with intricate beadwork and a flowing train. Her hair was styled in soft curls, framing her lovely face. Lord Rupert Nevill, a dashing young man in his military uniform, appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself as he danced with the future monarch. The Royal Navy and Merchant Navy Ball was an annual event that brought together members of the Royal Family and high-ranking naval officers to celebrate the important role of the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy in protecting Britain's shores. The event took place at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London, and was an opportunity for the young Princess to begin her public duties as the new monarch. This photograph captures a special moment in history, as Princess Elizabeth begins her journey towards becoming Queen, surrounded by the pomp and pageantry of a grand Royal event. The image is a testament to the grace and poise of the young Princess, as well as the sense of hope and renewal that came with the end of World War II and the beginning of a new era for the British monarchy.
