1896 Battenberg Beatrice Colonel Ducal Hesse

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph taken in 1894, Colonel Prince Henry of Battenberg, the morganatic descendant of the Grand Ducal House of Hesse, is seen in his regal attire at the Balmoral Bazaar. Prince Henry, born in 1858, was a prominent figure in European royal circles, known for his military prowess and diplomatic skills. As a morganatic descendant, Henry was not eligible to inherit the throne of Hesse, but his life took an unexpected turn when he married Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom in 1885. Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, was not a royal princess in her own right but was granted the title of Princess of Battenberg upon her marriage. The union between Prince Henry and Princess Beatrice was controversial due to the moral and social stigma attached to morganatic marriages. However, the couple's popularity grew, and they were eventually granted the title of Serene Highnesses by Queen Victoria in 1891. In this photograph, Prince Henry cuts an imposing figure in his military uniform, complete with a sword and sash. His stern expression and piercing gaze add to his air of authority and dignity. Princess Beatrice, who is not present in the photograph, was known for her beauty, intelligence, and charm. Together, they made a formidable couple and were a beloved addition to the British Royal Family. Despite their happiness, tragedy struck when Prince Henry passed away suddenly in 1896 at the age of 37. Princess Beatrice was left a widow at the young age of 35, but she went on to live a long and fulfilling life, becoming a patron of various charities and organizations. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a love story that transcended social norms and left a lasting impact on European royal history.
