EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century illustration depicts the biblical story of Elisha's prophecy, as recorded in 2 Kings 6:1-7. In the image, Elisha, a prophet and a central figure in the Old Testament, is seen with his servant, gazing intently towards the enemy army camped outside the city gates. The servant expresses his concern over the vast number of enemy forces and the seemingly insurmountable odds against the small city. However, Elisha remains calm and reassures his servant, predicting that God will provide a miraculous victory. He instructs his servant to prepare for the enemy's arrival by having all the city's inhabitants hide in the interior rooms, leaving pots filled with boiling stew at the city gates. As the enemy approaches, the pots miraculously cause the water to gush out and cover the enemy soldiers, causing confusion and chaos, allowing the city's defenders to easily overpower them. This illustration, with its rich details and vivid colors, beautifully captures the essence of this biblical story. The use of dramatic lighting and the contrast between the peaceful city and the ominous enemy camp create a sense of tension and anticipation. The historical significance of this scene, as depicted in the Bible, adds depth and meaning to the image, making it a fascinating and intriguing piece of Christian art from the 19th century.
