Australian troops counter-attack at Amiens, WW1

Australian troops hold the line at Villers Bretonneux nine miles east of Amiens during a German attack during the Battle of Amiens in April 1918. The image was an accurate impression by Sphere special artist, Fortunino Matania, having been reconstructed with the help of eyewitness accounts and official material. In the foreground, an infantryman, his rifle slung over his shoulder, takes over a Lewis Gun whose crew had been put out of action. Behind that can be seen another soldier hitting a German with his tin helmet (having already strangled another with his bare hands) while a third German attempts to flee down a railway cutting but is stopped by the gun fire of the Australian officers batman. Date: 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intensity and brutality of the Battle of Amiens during World War I, as Australian troops hold their ground against a relentless German attack nine miles east of the city in April 1918. The scene at Villers Bretonneux is depicted with meticulous detail by Fortunino Matania, an Italian-born British artist who reconstructed the image with the help of eyewitness accounts and official material. In the foreground, an Australian infantryman takes over a Lewis Gun from its fallen crew, its heavy tripod and belt-fed ammunition still in place. Behind him, another soldier delivers a fatal blow to a German soldier with his tin helmet, having already strangled another with his bare hands. A third German, attempting to flee down a railway cutting, is met with the gunfire of Australian officers and their batman. The Battle of Amiens, also known as the Second Battle of the Somme, was a significant turning point in the war, marking the beginning of the Allied advance towards the German border. The Australian troops' courage and determination in the face of the enemy's assault are vividly captured in this powerful image, which offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
