EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, three remaining Supermarine Spitfire XIXs, PM631, PS853, and PS915, make their way to RAF Biggin Hill in the United Kingdom, marking a significant moment in aviation history. The trio of iconic aircraft, escorted by a Gloster Javelin and a Hawker Hunter, were being flown to join Fighter Command's unit Hurricane. The Supermarine Spitfire XIXs, with their distinctive silhouettes and iconic status as symbols of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) bravery and resilience during the Battle of Britain, were to be meticulously maintained for ceremonial flypasts and commemorative events. The pilots of these aircraft, Group Captain James Edgar Johnson, DSO, DFC, Group Captain James Rankin, DSO, DFC, and Wing Commander Peter D. Thompson, DFC, were all decorated Battle of Britain veterans, adding an extra layer of prestige to this momentous occasion. The Spitfire XIXs, with their powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engines, were the last major production variant of the legendary Spitfire series. Their presence at RAF Biggin Hill marked the end of an era, as these aircraft were among the last remaining examples of the type in RAF service. The escorts, a Gloster Javelin and a Hawker Hunter, represented the newer generations of RAF aircraft, showcasing the evolution of military aviation technology. This photograph captures a poignant moment in aviation history, as these iconic aircraft, piloted by decorated veterans, make their way to RAF Biggin Hill, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in the RAF's storied history.
