EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Pipers of the 1 / 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, 5th Brigade, 2nd Division, 1st Army, stationed in France during 1915. The pipers, all proudly wearing Government Pattern kilts adorned with the Black Watch badge on their Glengarrys, inscribed with HLI, were an essential part of the Scottish regiment's rich military heritage. Georges Scott, the photographer, captured this moment in history during a pivotal time in the First World War. Scott, born in 1873, began his career in the 1890s and worked as a war correspondent for the prestigious news magazine L Illustration during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. When war broke out in 1914, Scott joined the French Army and was able to continue his work as an artist and illustrator for the same publication, producing many now famous works dealing with the Great War. The pipers in this photograph embody the spirit of the Scottish regiment, their kilts and badges a testament to their proud Highland heritage. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the daily life of these soldiers during their service in France.
