EDITORS COMMENTS
Peter I, also known as Peter the Just, was the King of Portugal and the Algarve from 1357 until his death in 1367. This impressive Gothic sculpture, located in the Monastery of Santa Maria in Alcobaça, Portugal, depicts the king in his tomb. Peter I is shown in a free-standing, round sepulchre, surrounded by intricately carved figures and statues. The sculpture is executed in the rock, showcasing the artistic skills of the medieval period. Born in 1320, Peter I ascended to the throne at the age of 22, following the death of his father, King Afonso IV. During his reign, he focused on strengthening Portugal's defenses against external threats, particularly from the Castilians. In 1365, he signed the Treaty of Alcaçovas with Castile, which secured Portugal's independence and established the boundaries between the two kingdoms. The Monastery of Santa Maria in Alcobaça, where Peter I's tomb is located, is a significant example of Portuguese Gothic architecture. Founded in 1178, the monastery underwent extensive renovations during Peter I's reign, with the construction of the royal tombs being a notable addition. The sculpture of Peter I is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the medieval period in Europe. It showcases the intricate detail and craftsmanship that characterized Gothic art, as well as the importance of religious institutions in shaping the artistic landscape of the time. The figure of Peter I, depicted in a peaceful and regal pose, serves as a reminder of his significant role in Portuguese history and the enduring legacy of the Gothic tradition.
