EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Transall C-160D 50+53, a versatile military transport aircraft of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), during its visit to RAF Greenham Common for the 1973 International Air Tattoo. The Transall, an acronym for TRANSport ALLianz, was a joint venture between France, Germany, and Spain, and was designed to provide a multi-role transport and tactical airlift capability for its European partners. The Transall C-160D, with its distinctive blue and gray camouflage, is seen here parked on the tarmac, surrounded by a variety of other aircraft from different air forces. In the background, one can spot the iconic silhouette of the Super Mystère 10R2 of the French 1/10 Escadron de Chasse, as well as the Valois transport aircraft of the French 705th Base Aérienne. The Transall C-160D was a successor to the earlier Transall C-160A and C-160B models, featuring improved engines and avionics. It was capable of carrying up to 55 passengers or 22 tonnes of cargo, making it an essential asset for the transportation of troops, equipment, and supplies. The International Air Tattoo, held annually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, is Europe's largest military airshow. The event showcases a diverse range of military aircraft from around the world, providing an unparalleled opportunity for aviation enthusiasts to witness the latest military technology and pay tribute to the history and heritage of military aviation. This photograph, taken in 1973, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the Transall C-160D in its element, as it proudly represented the German Air Force at this prestigious airshow.
