EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Royal Air Force's McDonnell Douglas F-4K Phantom FG.1, registration number XV573 (msn 3065/9327), at its home base, RAF Leuchars, during the 1980s. The F-4K Phantom FG.1 was a variant of the Phantom that was originally operated by the Royal Navy but was later transferred to the Royal Air Force upon release from naval service. First taking to the skies on October 29, 1968, and delivered to the Royal Air Force on March 24, 1969, this Phantom served with distinction for over two decades. The F-4K Phantom was a versatile and powerful aircraft, capable of performing various roles including air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance. Despite its impressive service history, XV573 was eventually retired from the Royal Air Force and scrapped at RAF Leuchars in April 1992. This photograph captures the Phantom in its prime, a testament to the iconic status it holds in the history of the Royal Air Force and the aviation industry as a whole.
