EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the power and majesty of the Royal Air Force's Avro Vulcan B.2 XL386 as it graces the skies above an airshow in the United States during the 1960s. The Vulcan, a iconic British jet-powered bomber, was delivered to the RAF on May 11, 1962, and was fitted with an inert Blue Steel stand-off nuclear missile in this image. The Vulcan was a key component of the RAF's strategic nuclear deterrent during the Cold War era. XL386 served faithfully in the RAF until its retirement to the Fire Fighting School at RAF Manston on August 26, 1982, where it was given the registration number 8760M. Tragically, the Vulcan was scrapped in 1994, marking the end of an era for this legendary aircraft. This photograph, taken circa 1966, offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the Avro Vulcan B.2 XL386 in its prime, as it soared through the skies with grace and power, embodying the spirit of aviation and the technological advancements of the 1960s.
