Piper PA-30 Twin Commanche G-AXER

Piper Twin PA-30-160 Commanche G-AXER (msn 30-1820) at Wycombe Air Park. AXER was re-registered in Eire as EI-ANU on 1 December 1969, to participate in the London-Sydney Air Race (December 18, 1969 to January 4, 1970). Wearing a Kerrygold (dairy products) livery, and the race number 69, it was flown by T. Phillips and V. R. Mitchell, placing fourth in a field of 63 participants, and second in Class B, for twin-engined aircraft. On return to the UK in 1970 the aircraft returned to G-AXER. Date: 1969

This particular aircraft holds a rich history, as it was once registered in Eire as EI-ANU in December 1969, in preparation for the London-Sydney Air Race. The Kerrygold dairy products livery adorning the plane, along with the race number 69, reflects its participation in this historic event. The London-Sydney Air Race, which took place from December 18, 1969, to January 4, 1970, attracted a field of 63 participants. G-AXER, flown by T. Phillips and V. R. Mitchell, finished an impressive fourth place overall and a commendable second place in Class B, for twin-engined aircraft. Upon returning to the UK in 1970, the aircraft reverted back to its original registration, G-AXER.
