EDITORS COMMENTS
North American P-51D Mustang N335, affectionately known as "Bardahl II," is seen here at Santa Monica Airport in 1968, with its sister-ship N335J just visible parked alongside. This iconic warbird was originally built as P-51D-30-NA 44-72902 for the United States Army Air Force (USAF) in June 1947. After serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force as 9564.20 from 1950 to 1960, it was then owned by Intercontinental Airways, Canastota, NY, from 1957 to 1960, registered as N6343T but stored at Carberry, Manitoba. In 1960, the Mustang was acquired by Aero Enterprises, Elkhart, IN, and later by E.D. Weiner of Santa Monica, CA, in 1964, who registered it as N335 and gave it the race number 14. Bardahl II became a formidable force in the racing circuit, with Weiner taking first place in the Transcontinental Race from Tampa to Reno in 1965, averaging 400.234 mph. The Mustang's distinctive white-black checkers and polished propeller were a sight to behold during races. In 1968, the Mustang was repainted with yellow and black checkerboard, and a new racing canopy and turtle-deck were installed, winning the Harolds Club Transcontinental Trophy Dash from Milwaukee to Reno, covering 1,667 miles at an average speed of 361.14 mph. The following year, the Mustang was repainted all red as the "STP Special," but Weiner was too sick to fly in the Transcontinental Race. He died a week later. From 1973 to 2002, the Mustang was owned by Violet M. Bonzer of Los Angeles, CA. It was loaned to the EAA Museum in Hales Corner, WI, from 1973 to 1980, then stored in Truckee, CA, before being trucked to Mesa, AZ, for restoration. The Mustang is currently undergoing restoration to airworthy condition as "American Dreamer." This photograph, taken circa 1968, captures the essence of Bardahl II's storied racing history and its enduring legacy as a symbol of aviation excellence.
