EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken in 1969, we find ourselves outside the Museum of Science and Technology on Newhall Street in Birmingham, where a traction engine rally is in full swing. Two magnificent engines, the McLaren General Purpose Engine, registration AI 3029, number 757, and the Fowler T3A2 class Road Roller, registration FF 4913, number 21629, are proudly displayed. The McLaren engine, built by J&H McLaren & Co. in Hunslet in 1904, boasts a 6 Nhp (Nominal Horsepower) single-cylinder steam engine. Its sleek design and intricate details showcase the engineering prowess of the time. The Fowler Road Roller, constructed by John Fowler & Co. in Leeds in 1937, is powered by a 3 Nhp compound steam engine. With its robust build and imposing presence, it is a testament to the industrial strength and resilience of the era. The traction engine rally, a gathering of these historic machines, offers a glimpse into the past when steam power was the driving force behind heavy transportation. The McLaren and Fowler engines, with their unique identities - AI 3029 and FF 4913 respectively - stand as symbols of a bygone era, showcasing the ingenuity and innovation that shaped the transport industry. This photograph, captured in the heart of Birmingham, offers a fascinating look into the history of steam-powered transportation and the machines that defined a generation.
