EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Forca Aerea Portuguesa (Portuguese Air Force) Nord 2502B Noratlas military transport aircraft, registration number FAP 6413, at Cardiff-Rhoose Airport. Originally manufactured as a Nord 2501 Noratlas, this aircraft underwent conversion to the 2502B standard in the late 1950s, featuring Turbomeca Marbore auxiliary turbojet engines installed in wing-tip pods. The Portuguese Air Force acquired this aircraft in 1962, replacing its earlier models. The Nord Noratlas, a versatile and durable design, served the Portuguese military with distinction throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In this image, captured circa 1968, the Noratlas appears in pristine condition, showcasing the distinctive Turbomeca engines and the Portuguese Air Force insignia proudly displayed on the fuselage. The Nord 2502B Noratlas, with its impressive capabilities, was a vital asset to the Portuguese Air Force during this era. Its service history with the Portuguese military began when it was taken on strength in 1962, and it remained in service until the late 1970s when it was eventually retired and scrapped. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Portuguese Air Force and the role of the Nord Noratlas in its fleet during the late 1960s.
