EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Curtiss C-46F-1-CU Commando N4877V (msn 22442), a historic military aircraft with an intriguing past. The image, believed to have been taken around 1957, depicts the plane in its prime, with the distinctive markings of Capitol Airways. The Commando had an eventful history before it joined Capitol Airways. Disposed of by the Foreign Liquidation Commission on August 20, 1947, it was later bought by Claire Chennault and Whiting Willauer in 1948, registered as N8309C with Central Air Transport Corp. in December 1949. In December 1952, it was acquired by CAT SA, and then by Flying Tiger Line on January 19, 1953, who registered it as N4877V. The plane was later bought by Intercontinental Airways in June 1953 and Interair Parts Corporation in July 1953. The aircraft was then transferred to F. A. Miller and D. Rich on the same day, and later leased by Capitol Airways in April 1954. In November 1961, it was bought by Bird and Sons Inc. However, its story took a tragic turn when it crashed at Phou Fa (LS 16), Laos, on August 31, 1962. This photograph captures a moment in time when the Commando was still in service with Capitol Airways, a testament to its enduring history and the important role it played in the aviation industry.
