Blackburn YA. 1 Firecrest RT651

Blackburn YA.1 Firecrest RT651 at the 1947 SBAC Radlett air-show, parked next to the first prototype Boulton Paul Balliol VL892. Designed to fulfil Specification S.28-43 the Blackburn B-48 Firecrest, (given the SBAC designation YA.1), was a single-seat carrier-borne strike aircraft, developed from the Blackburn Firebrand. Two prototypes were built, but no production was carried out as the piston-engined Firecrest was soon out-classed by potential turboprop powered aircraft like the Westland Wyvern. Date: 1947

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness a significant moment in aviation history at the 1947 SBAC Radlett airshow. The Blackburn YA.1 Firecrest RT651, a carrier-borne strike aircraft, is parked next to the first prototype Boulton Paul Balliol VL892. The Firecrest, also known as the Blackburn B-48, was designed to meet Specification S.28-43 of the British Ministry of Aircraft Production. The Firecrest was developed from the successful Blackburn Firebrand and was intended to be a single-seat, piston-engined aircraft for the Royal Navy. Two prototypes were built, but production was not carried out due to the emergence of more advanced turboprop-powered aircraft like the Westland Wyvern. The Firecrest, with its sleek design and powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, was outclassed by the potential capabilities of the Wyvern. The Firecrest RT651, displayed at the airshow, is a testament to the innovative spirit of aviation engineering during the post-war era. Its presence at the Radlett airshow, alongside the Boulton Paul Balliol VL892, highlights the progress and competition in the development of carrier-borne aircraft for the Royal Navy. Despite not entering production, the Firecrest RT651 remains an important part of aviation history.
